The word ‘maundy’ is believed to be related to the Latin word ‘mandatum’ or mandate.  On this night, Jesus gave a mandate to His disciples that they were to continue celebrating His supper in remembrance of Him.  We continue to follow Christ’s mandate tonight as we receive the gifts He gives through His body and blood.

Tenebrae is a Latin word which means, “shadows.”  The distinctive feature of the Tenebrae service is the gradual darkening of the sanctuary.  The service is symbolic of the apparent victory of the powers of darkness over Jesus at his death, but of their actual defeat by Him who is the Light of the World.  The first part of the service recounts the events leading up to the death of Jesus as recorded by the Gospel writer, John.  Part two reviews the seven last words of Jesus from the cross.
